On page optimization is an important part of setting up a website, and it’s one of the key areas of SEO. Things like the overall site design and the way URLs and page titles are created can all effect how a search engine will rank you. There are certain ‘rules’ to how Google places websites when It indexes them, and a site following these rules is likely to do better than a site that does not.
On page Optimization ensures that your website is search engine friendly as possible. If your website is not optimized then you have less chance of getting good results in the search engines, here is a quick guide towards good on page SEO:
* Make sure that all of your web pages can be indexed by search engines – make sure that they all have at least one link from somewhere on your site.
* Make sure that you have unique content on every single page.
* Make sure that your meta-tags are arranged correctly – your page title tags and description tags should describe the content of your different web pages. The page title tags should be less than 68 characters and the description tags more detailed but less than 148 characters.
* Make sure you label the different headers on your web pages using H tags.
* Make sure that your web page URLs are SEO friendly, use mod re-write for Linux and Apache hosting or use IIS redirect for Windows. Ideally make it so that the URLs describe your content i.e. use domain.com/blue-widgets.php as opposed to having something like domain.com/product.php?cat=146. Use hyphens or underscores to separate words in the URLs.
* Make sure that the links within your site are complete i.e. if you are linking to the blue widgets page link to domain.com/blue-widgets.php as opposed to just blue-widgets.php.
* Make sure that you use descriptive URLs for your images i.e. use blue-widget.jpg as apposed a bunch of numbers and or letters .jpg.
* Make sure that you label all of your images with descriptive alt attributes.
* Make sure that you make good use of anchor text links within your content – if you have a page about blue widgets, use the phrase blue widgets in the text that links to it.
* Make sure that there is only one version of your site – 301 redirect all non www. URLs to the www. ones or vice versa.
* Make sure that there is only one version of your homepage – 301 redirect the index or default page back to domain.com.
* Use the rel=”nofollow” tag in the links to websites that you do not trust, you think maybe using spamming techniques or you do not want to help in the search engines.
* Make sure that your code is valid, in some instances bad code can lead to search engines not being able to properly read a page. Use the W3C validator to check your markup.

Expires META Tag
The Expires META Tag declares when a web page is set to expire. The purpose of this tag can be seen both for search engines and browsers. On web browsers, expired pages use a new GET request whenever they are tried to access again rather than a cached version of them being loaded. Search engines on the other hand use this as a directive for them to remove the web page from index. If this tag is used in conjunction with the META Revisit-after tag, search engine crawlers come up after the given interval to re-index the page. The Expires META Tag is particularly good when your web page is updated regularly such as a web page delivering news. It is important that the date and time specified in the content attribute is in accordance with the RFC 1036 format which earlier was RFC 850.
Generator META Tag
The Generator META Tag describes the tool or software that was used to build the underlying web page. This is more of an informative tag although browsers can use it for improving their own functionality.
Keywords META Tag
The Keyword META Tag consists of number of keywords that may be used by people to find your web page through search engines. This is also one of the most important tags with regards to on-page SEO and is generally used along with the META Description tag. The keywords specified in this tag must reflect the content of your web page to help search engines rank your pages in an efficient manner.
Language META Tag

The Refresh META Tag is interpreted by web browsers to redirect from the current page to some other location after a given number of seconds. This can be a very useful tag, however many search engines discourage the use of this tag due to the fact that this tag can be manipulated by users to create duplicated or fake content which can create problems to the search engine index. Use of this tag is not recommended, however one can use them on authenticated pages for functionality. Bear in mind that if you are allowing your authenticated pages to be crawled by search engines, using the Refresh META Tag can be lethal.
